START: πŸ”΅ Self-initiation 🟒 Task-specific 🟑 Accelerated-learning 🟠 Real Life 🟣 Transformation

S.T.A.R.T is the framework that guides all of our programs, including STRIDE, REACH and ACTIVATE - and soon, KINDY MOVES!

β€œS.T.A.R.T. with more independence, better engagement, higher confidence, and most importantly, joy in learning – it’s transformative!”

πŸ”΅ Self Initiation β†’

Therapy begins with the child’s choice and brain-driven motivation. Instead of the therapist starting every movement, we create environments where the child decides to begin. This taps intrinsic drive, activates cognitive engagement, and builds true autonomy. Research on child-initiated practice shows superior motor learning and neuroplastic changes because the child is actively problem-solving.

Self initiation builds intrinsic motivation & true autonomy by tapping into what motivates the child. Most importantly, it is child initiated and not therapist initiated. Professor Iona Novak puts it beautifully "whose brain is doing the work - the child's or the therapist's?"

🟒 Task Specificity β†’

Real-world, meaningful skills that transfer to daily life. No tricks, no reflexes, no balancing on boards, it is just proven, powerful ways to translate into the real-world. It's all about focusing on translating the clinical to the real world using the latest in neuroplasticity learnings.

We target exactly the skills that matter in daily life β€” climbing stairs at home, playing on the playground, or getting dressed. No generic drills. Specificity ensures the brain wires for real contexts, leading to better transfer than isolated exercises.

🟑 Accelerated Learning β†’

Faster mastery with cutting-edge strategies. Intensive therapy is not merely about intensity - it's about calculated rest and recovery phases and giving time to consolidate new learnings. There is more to training than working hard - focused training, using the right techniques gets you there faster and more efficiently.

Intensity is smart, not maximum. We use optimal dosing, backed by the latest data, with built-in rest and consolidation periods so the brain can actually form and strengthen new pathways. Over-intensity without recovery can spike cortisol, which studies confirm inhibits neuroplasticity in the motor cortex.

🟠 Real Life Application β†’

"We don't go to therapy to be good at therapy, we go to therapy to improve our quality of life and meaningful participation". The translation of therapy from the clinic to the real world is a vital component of the START framework. You won't find a reliance on outdated manual facilitation techniques, or an over-emphasis on balance and core strength part-task practice that is not reflective of the real world.

This is where S.T.A.R.T. diverges sharply from traditional intensive models. We use part-task/whole-task practice in natural or simulated everyday settings β€” no boxes, planks, or part-task breakdowns that don’t reflect real life. A child learns to stand up from the floor by actually practising getting up in a play scenario, not just isolated, manually facilitated leg lifts. This produces significantly better functional gains, balance, and participation than manually facilitated movements.

No boxes, no balancing beams and no therapist initiated movements looking for a reflex action.

🟣 Transformation β†’

Rewiring the brain through positive reinforcement, play, & celebration (no cortisol inducing discomfort, pain or crying). It's a different paradigm - "No pain, no gain!" has "no place!" in paediatric therapy. When a child makes good associations with therapy, when they trust their therapist, when they enjoy their time learning new skills, it makes for powerful neuroplastic responses.

The ultimate goal: therapy becomes a joyful journey. When children form positive associations β€” laughing, choosing, succeeding β€” powerful neuroplastic responses follow. Confidence grows, independence blooms, and a love of learning emerges. We celebrate when families report children who initiate play at home, engage willingly in sessions, and carry skills into kindergarten or the park.

"Parents deserve an approach that honours their child's potential and makes the journey exciting." Let's allow children to be children - to enjoy their childhood, for it to be cherished, treasured and loved.

πŸ₯³ Families see big wins with S.T.A.R.T. Birthed out of the Healthy Strides Foundation: the world leading clinic in Perth Western Australia, it provides children with more independence, active choice, better engagement, higher confidence, and importantly, joy in learning - it's transformative!
